Abstract: Consider an infinite, finitely generated group. A natural operator, acting on complex-valued functions on the group, is the averaging operator defined by a finite subset. What can be said about its norm(s)? I will discuss some results that, in particular, address the case of spherical averaging operators on Gromov hyperbolic groups. In order to provide some context, the introductory part of the talk will be devoted to the property of Rapid Decay.
